Here is local news from David Webb,
Everyone's talking ice fishing, even though it's too early and there is still plenty of great stream and reservoir fishing available.
I'm content fishing the Provo, Weber, Green, Strawberry, Jordanelle, Bear Lake and other old standbys. But for you ice fools, here's our official forecast.
I like three inches of hard, clear ice before I venture out.
Uinta Mountain high elevation lakes should already have ice, but snow makes access difficult. You might be able to get into Whitney, Stateline, Marsh, Hoop and other north slope lakes using 4X4 and/or snowmobile.
Boulder Mountain lakes are mostly closed to fishing from Nov 1 through April 21, but a few are open and should now be icing up. Oak Creek and a few others may offer good ice fishing about now. Access may be very difficult.
Puffer Lake, above Beaver, is one of the first road-accessible lakes to freeze, and it should have safe ice any day now. It can offer good early-season fishing for small rainbows.
Huntington, Cleveland, Scofield and Electric Lake are often fishable by Dec 1. The cold temps this weekend will cap them, but ice safety will be questionable. Test carefully before you risk your life.
Current Creek, Otter Creek and Panguitch Lake usually become safe in early December.
Strawberry is difficult to predict. It is often safe by mid-December.
Fish Lake is usually fishable by Christmas.
Bear Lake and Flaming Gorge may or may not develop ice. The northern half of Flaming Gorge may offer ice fishing by mid-January.
Lake Powell, Quail Lake and other southern waters never freeze.
Anyone up for adventure? I've always wanted to ice fish Moon Lake early in the season. It supports and incredible number of small trout and kokanee. They stocked splake there a few years ago and I'm thinking some should be getting big. Shoot me an email if you want to go.
The 2004 Fishing Proclamation is available on the DWR's site in pdf format.
Northern Ute Thanksgiving Pow-Wow will be Nov. 27-29, in Ft. Duchesne, in NE Utah. This Native American contest pow-wow will feature dancers and drummers, arts & crafts and Native American food. The public is welcome. Info: 1-435-722-8541.
Festival of Lights Parade at Lake Powell will be Nov. 29. Houseboats decorated for Christmas will parade through the bays, their multi-colored lights reflecting off the black water between sheer sandstone cliffs. Special deals are available on houseboat rentals during this period.
Heber Valley Railroad presents the Polar Express, Nov. 28 - Dec. 23. This is a magical journey to the North Pole, re-creating Chris Van Allsburg's popular Christmas tale of the same name. Get tickets from Smithstix: 800-888-8499.
