Oregon Fisheries Update

November 14th – November 20th, 2003

River fishing for chinook? Fall crabbing on the Columbia or your favorite coastal estuary? Go to: http://www.theguidesforecast.com/techrpt.shtml and get your hands on lessons for these different fisheries and how to catch the hordes of salmon coming back this fall! Let us help you make the most of your outdoor experience!

The Columbia is closed to all retention of sturgeon and therefore, effort is very light. The only 2 bright spots on the Columbia is the John Day Arm steelhead fishing where almost 1.5 fish/rod was tallied over the weekend, and easy limits of Dungeness crab are very available in the Astoria/Hammond area.

The Tillamook district is slowing for herring trollers on the bay although fish are being taken every day. The jetty has been the best producer as of late. The tidewater bobber fishery is also very much underway with the Wilson producing the best results. Any measurable precipitation will have a very positive effect on the Tillamook area streams. The ocean and chum salmon fishing both close on 11/15 in the Tillamook district.

Most ocean tributaries have dark chinook present. The rain which is forecast for this weekend and into next week will bring fresh fish into many systems.

If the precipitation amount is significant, it is expected to bring the marginal summer steelhead fishing opportunities on the North Santiam to a close. Winter steelhead are expected to start showing in the Santiam system around Christmas. Thanksgiving is the traditional kickoff for the winter steelhead season on the Sandy and Clackamas Rivers but will be best in December.

Ling Cod and Canary Rockfish will be off limits when a new restriction goes into place on or about November 21st. This closure, which will effect the Pacific Coast from Canada to Mexico and will also disallow bottom fishing beyond the 27-fathom curve is due to over fishing.

No trout stocking is scheduled this week.

Finally, a fellow Oregonian posting to the Oregon boards.

Glad to have you here tgfdoug...look forward to more reports. By the way, do you fish much in the waters around Eugene/Springfield?

Glad to be here and glad I found it - this is great!

I don't do much fishing at all, my brother does it all as a guide. He spends most of his time on the coast between Tillamook and Astoria.

We get information from many other guides that we pull together in a weekly report and it includes areas throughout Oregon. My time on this is on our site (http://www.TheGuidesForecast.com/) and working with our customers.
